New Patterns Available!

Hi Guys!

Thanks to a recent customer Rich, we have some very awesome patterns available to the LedsAreCool product line. Patterns include a Rain pattern, Fireworks, Wave patterns and my personal favorite Top to Bottom Random Pixels! These are available for the 5x5x5(C-125) and 8x8x8(C-512) models. I plan to add these to the 3x3x3 product line in the near future. I'll make some videos soon.

5x5x5 Bit-Stream Information

There has been some interest in the 5x5x5 bit-stream for sending realtime patterns to the cube using custom home-brew software. So I added an excel spreadsheet to the 5x5x5 package.

I'll release the 8x8x8 bit-stream information in the near future.

I ask if you make an awesome custom program to email the binary (or source if you want) to matt@ledsarecool.com so I can post it on the Website/Blog for everyone to share!

8x8x8 Drilled Panel Spacing for Kits

There has been a change to the drilled panel spacing on the kits since June 21st.

Please measure the actual spacing on the panel before starting to make your kit. It will either be 1" or 1 1/16th". This affects the horizontal spacing only. The pdf layout template included in the package has the spacing at 1 1/16th" so you can print/use that for your template creation.


I have updated the instructions for all future customers to be 1 1/16th" and that is what will ship from now on.

New Site with Pattern Sharing Coming Soon!

We are developing a new website for LedsAreCool products. You will be able to create an account, upload and download patterns for the 8x8x8, 5x5x5 and 3x3x3 Cube's. It is pretty exciting, I can't wait to see some of the cool patterns you guys come up with!

Blog Re-Arranged ;)

Hey Guys,

I rearranged the blog to make it a bit easier to get everything. I added the three packages on the right side for each cube, 3x3x3, 5x5x5 and 8x8x8. So you only have to only one file for your cube instead of a bunch of different ones. I also changed the file hosting site to one without all those crappy ads! Thanks to hostfile.org.

Also I'm going to try to make something for you guys to upload patterns and try to get the community going. I'm sure you guys have made some awesome ones!

New run of 8x8x8's

A new run of 8x8x8 boards is coming out. We are dropping support for stand-a-lone real time clock and on-board spectrum analyser. We are however ramping up the wireless functionality, This gives us much more flexibility. The PC would be master... but you can stream data to the cube across the room. No direct cube USB required. It is also possible to stream to multiple cubes at the same time.

All initial boards sold will also support this module once it is complete. The transmitter will have to be bought separately.

Any questions about this upcoming module let me know.

8x8x8 Update

Hey All,

Been a while since my last post... but I do have good news. The uSD card functionality is now working! There is a slight modification that needs to be done to the first run of boards. I'm going to attach instructions this week. For those that are not comfortable performing the modification. You can ship the controller board back and the modification will be done for you. You will only pay the shipping to get the board to me (should only be around $8). The modification and return shipping is free.

Kits and Assembled Units Shipped May 11th 2012 and later have the modification already completed.

8x8x8 pricing and availability

It's finally here...pricing and availability... please read...

These prices are promotional prices for the first run and are subject to change when more features are added to the software and firmware. The initial cube's sold WILL REQUIRE software and firmware updates in the future, firmware is loaded through the bootloader using USB, if you are not comfortable with doing this I suggest you do not buy the first release cube's. Also all features to be added by software and firmware updates are not necessarily going to work, there may be hardware changes required (This is unlikely, but it could happen). I suggest only people who are comfortable with electronics or hobbiests buy a cube from this initial release. As always I'll keep everyone updated on my blog for new releases.

8x8x8 Update

Wow, time keeps flying by... The 8x8x8 is so very close to being released. We have 7 units being burnt-in this week to weed out any defective LED's. If all goes well, Units will be available this weekend. uSD software is still being polished but I am confident in the Hardware so that option can be enabled with a software update after you guys get them.

Look out for a video this week! As well as beta software for you guys to start making patterns.

Updates...

Hey guys, I hope everyone had a good holiday. Just a few things I wanted to update you guys on...

For everything...
- We now offer yellow LED's as an option.

For the 3x3x3...
- Prices have gone up slightly to from $25 to $27.95 for the base kit as our software is now loaded and editing software is available

For the 5x5x5...
- We are going to officially start selling C-125 Model 101 Kits on eBay for $55 or $65 with the case, kits will come with the controller assembled.
- The C-125 Model 101 case listing is going to disappear
- The C-125 Model 101 assembled listing is going to have the case as a standard option selling for $99.95, if the case is not desired a $10 discount will be sent after purchase.

For the 8x8x8...
- We got the uSD cards working, more software still needs to be written.
- Initial Release will have uSD support (saving patterns etc..), USB streamed Spectrum analyzer, PC editing software, real time editing, Global Dimming,
- Initial Release will NOT have software for the Real-Time Clock, Wireless Controller(Module sold separately later) or On-Board microphone Spectrum anaylzer but the Cube's will be able to be updated by our PC software once those modules are coded.
- RoHS assembled units will be special order only (Its much harder to solder.the LED Cage with Lead-Free)

- Initial Release will be 9 Blue Units and 1 Red Unit at a minimum (Non RoHS units)
- Kits or Assembled Controllers will also be available (Kits and Controllers are RoHS compliant)
- I'll post Final Pricing soon.
